Android is the most-used mobile operating system in the mobile world. Unfortunately sometimes android smartphones encounter problems. Android Black Screen Of Death is one of the most common problems by many android users.

Often referred to as the ‘black screen of death’ as a association to the blue screen of death in Windows computers, this problem has been a part of Android life for a few users for years. Ever since Android 2.2 Froyo, an unfortunate minority of users have had their phone reboot to a black screen with no way to get out of the cycle. Fortunately, there are a ways out of the black screen after turning on your Android device.

The most common scenario involves a reboot, the manufacturer or Android logo appearing on screen, a button may flash and then nothing but a black screen. Essentially, this means the device hit a serious issue and couldn’t load the operating system.

Battery & SD-Card check

  1. Remove the back cover of your android device and replace the battery to make sure that the contacts are touching properly, and the phone is getting power. Then charge your phone and leave it for charging for few hours.  
  2. If the first step fails to solve Android Black Screen Of Death issue, then take out the sim card, SD-card and battery from the phone and leave them for 5-10 seconds. Put the battery and charge it.  

Reboot into recovery mode to fix black screen issues

  1. Power off the device.  
  2. Press and hold the volume down and power button until the Android System Recovery screen appears.  
  3. Navigate using volume keys and select using the power key.  
  4. Select Wipe cache partition and allow to complete.  
  5. The device should automatically reboot, select the reboot option if it doesn’t.  

In the big majority of cases, this has addressed the black screen problem. This usually shows if an application is causing problems. If this is causing the problems for you, start troubleshooting all apps by disabling or uninstalling them until the device works normally again.

Factory reset to fix black screen issues

Time needed: 15 minutes.

If the previous step doesn’t work, the only other option to fix a black screen after turning on an Android device is a factory reset. This will clean the device of all your personal data so it should only be attempted as a last solution and after backing up all of your data if possible.

  1. Power off the device

    Power off your device and make sure its completely turned off.

  2. Hold volume down and power button

    Press and hold the volume down and power button until the Android System Recovery screen appears

  3. Navigate to Select Wipe Data

    Navigate using volume keys and select using the power key

  4. Select Wipe data/factory reset and confirm

    Select the Wipe Data/Factory Reset and confirm. Your device will now reboot. This might take a while.

  5. Wait until its turned on again.

    The device should automatically reboot or select the reboot option if it doesn’t.

If this final step fails, it is likely a hardware issue and you should follow that up with your provider.
